What You Will Study
Delivered within Castleford College’s purpose-built construction workshops, learners will have the opportunity to be in an environment that simulates the conditions of a construction site.
Theory will be introduced in the classroom environment and will be embedded throughout practical activities. The course will be delivered over four weeks.
What will the course cover?
- The principles of health, safety, welfare and environmentally responsible work practices and how they must be applied in relation to the work, self and to others including understanding the principles of risk assessments
- Basic awareness of environmental and health hazards
- Why, when and how health and safety control equipment should be used when undertaking groundworks (e.g. personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Working safely and securely in compliance with given information, organisational policies and procedures, and current health, safety and welfare legislation including following the procedures for working in contaminated ground
- Selecting the required resources including tools and fixtures
- Setting out and laying flags, paviours and edging to paths
- Installing ironworks relating to access covers and frames, and gully grates and frames including preparatory brickwork
- Using and maintaining power tools and equipment (including compactor plates; Stihl saw)
- Permit to dig documentation
- Knowledge associated with cofferdams
- The basic principles of internal and external drainage & ducting systems
- Installing and testing basic drainage and ducting
- Using basic setting out equipment including tape measures, levels, straight edges, lines and pins, boning rods and laser equipment under guidance of the supervisor
- Providing and removing temporary works including shallow excavation support (up to 1.2 metres)

Monday-Friday 9am-4.30pm for 3 weeks. Then 1 day on 4th week.

Practical tasks and theory tests.

Free for learners who self-refer.
Employers who refer staff will have to pay a contribution - £450pp if you are an SME (fewer than 250 employees) and £1350pp for large businesses (250+ employees).
- Further Study
Job seekers completing the course are guaranteed a job interview with a construction employer who are looking to hire new Groundworkers or Pipelayers. Employed participants will gain new skills and knowledge which will help them to progress their career.
All participants could move into a trade apprenticeship.
