“Graduating with a Certificate in Education is something I never thought I would achieve so I’m thrilled to have done it. After previously being a fitter, joiner and cabinet maker in the wood industry, I decided I wanted a change in career. I decided I needed something to future-proof myself and give a little back to education. I didn’t think teaching was ever an option, but the opportunity came up and I went for it and now here I am as a Lecturer in Carpentry and Joinery at Wakefield College.
I was scared to join education again as I’ve not been in it for a long time and there’s been so much new technology introduced since I left school. It can be quite daunting, but the tutors have shown, helped and guided us all the way through the different processes and different technology that we need to use for teaching.
What I enjoy most about teaching is that every day is different. Education is so fluid and it’s a dynamic atmosphere that I think you do come to crave after a while and really enjoy. I think if you’re thinking of moving from industry to teaching, definitely give it a go. You learn alongside people from every kind of industry and everyone you work with has been through the same process and been successful, so there’s nothing to be fearful of.”
