Course Overview

This qualification aims to assess and develop the knowledge and skills of people working in a variety of healthcare settings as Healthcare Assistants or Auxiliary Nurses.

The award is based on the assessment of actual work-based performance. The bulk of your learning will therefore be in the workplace, but training and support will be provided to ensure that you are meeting the required standard. You will work on a one-to-one basis with your Assessor, whose visits will be flexible to meet your needs and the needs of your employer.

What You Will Study

To gain the Diploma you must achieve a minimum of 46 credits, with 24 credits gained from the following mandatory units:

  • Safeguarding and protection in care settings
  • Responsibilities of a care worker
  • Communication in care settings
  • Duty of care
  • Handle information in care settings
  • Personal development in care settings
  • Equality and inclusion in care settings
  • Health, safety and wellbeing in care settings
  • Implement person-centred approaches in care settings

In addition to the core units, you will choose optional units that suit your current work role, and these will be discussed and planned with your Assessor, to achieve a further 22 credits.

  • Attendance Expectations

Your Assessor will need to meet with you regularly to monitor your progress and to plan your assessment sessions. These meetings can take place either at your workplace or on College premises.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

You will be allocated an assessor who will develop an individual learning plan and will guide you to develop an electronic portfolio of evidence to meet the learning outcomes. You will be assessed on your knowledge and workplace performance.

  • Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements except a College interview, and you must be at least 16 years of age.

However, since this qualification is assessed in the workplace, you need a job or work placement which offers you suitable experience and the chance to demonstrate the necessary skills.

    Basic computer skills are essential.
