Course Overview
Short course aimed at individuals who require skills in glazing and fenestration in the construction sector. Job seekers and career changers will benefit from gaining in-demand skills, a guaranteed job interview and employment opportunities. Those already working in the construction industry will be able to enhance their skills e.g. – carpenters looking to be able to fit windows as an extra service to customers.What You Will Study
Week 1
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop a knowledge associated with
• Awareness of health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance (Emergencies and First Aid provision and mandatory reporting of accidents and near misses) and impact on role. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). Fire safety. Health and Safety at Work Act. Asbestos awareness. Manual handling. signage, fire extinguishers. Safety signage. Situational awareness. Slips, trips, and falls. Working at height. Mobile elevated working platforms (MEWPS), Electrical safety, emergency stop procedures. Lone working.
• Fenestration installation industry: domestic and commercial.
• Mechanical properties, use and limitations of fenestration materials: aluminium, steel, timber, composites, PVC-U.
• Fixtures and fastening purpose and use: Handles, hinges, locks, trickle vents, louvers and frame extensions.
Week 2
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop knowledge and skills associated with
• Positioning and installation techniques of frames.
• Prepare openings for installation.
• Installation of Insulating Glass Unit (IGU); correct orientation of unit (low e glass or coated glass), location on the façade, safety glass.
• Tools and equipment used in fenestration installation: power tools, hand tools, cutting tools and measuring equipment.
• Techniques for measuring, marking and drilling materials.
• Methods of fixing: pack the frame in the aperture, selection of correct fastener or anchor, plug and screw, fix with sleeved anchors, brick screws, window lugs and door straps.
• Interim inspection requirements: windows and doors are in working order to meet manufacturers' instructions, cleaning of frame rebates, cleaning of joints, de-burring of trickle vents including excess swarf. Operation of locks and hardware
Week 3
Delivered: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Hours: from 09:00 to 16:30 daily
Participants will develop knowledge and skills associated with
• Well-being: mental and physical health considerations in self and others and how to access support.
• Interim inspection requirements: windows and doors are in working order to meet manufacturers' instructions, cleaning of frame rebates, cleaning of joints, de-burring of trickle vents including excess swarf. Operation of locks and hardware
• Pre handover checks: Investigation of snags and snagging techniques.
• Final inspection requirements: Final removal of all protective films, cleaning of glass and frames, cleaning of joints.
Throughout the delivery behaviours associated with effective communication; respect and teamwork will be developed with a focus on customer service.

Monday-Friday 9am-4.30pm for 3 weeks.

Employers who refer staff will have to pay a contribution - £315pp if you are an SME (fewer than 250 employees) and £945pp for large businesses (250+ employees).
