Eco-friendly christmas presents

If you are dreaming of a greener Christmas, then we have some tips to help you make more sustainable choices this Christmas.

  1. Christmas Tree - buy British (as local as possible and potted if possible), rent one or dress up your houseplant/s.
  2. Decorations – dress your house with items from nature, such as dried orange slices or cinnamon. Get your craft on by making new decorations or reuse preloved decorations.
  3. Lights - use LED or solar powered lights for your tree and other areas of your home.
  4. Gifting - when purchasing gifts for loved ones, shop second hand or from local businesses where possible. Or, you could attempt to make your own gifts – there’s nothing more thoughtful than a handmade gift! Table crackers can also be handmade and personalised to make them eco-friendly.
  5. Quality over quantity – invest your efforts and money into buying one gift as opposed to lots of small gifts. Alternatively, you could also gift an experience.
  6. Rethink wrapping – choose a sustainable option that’s ecofriendly, this could be using fabrics you already have, newspapers or even toilet rolls! Recycled wrapping paper, bows and ribbon can also be purchased.
  7. Cards - send ecards, make your own, buy plantable cards or FSC approved cards. Avoid glitter where you can, as it can escape into the environment.
  8. Dressing for the party season – jazz up your own clothes, re-wear your Christmas jumper or purchase second hand clothing through apps like Vinted, Depop or visit your local charity shop.
  9. Christmas food – plan your meals and mindfully purchase and consume food to minimise food waste. You can also incorporate more seasonal vegetables and plant-based food into your diet over the festive period. However, it’s important that you check that the food packaging is recyclable, as well as items such as table cloths.
  10. Parties – you can ask guests to bring their own crockery or to take turns in washing up. Think ahead and cook other food whilst you have the oven on for Christmas dinner, giving you perfect leftovers to heat up for the next event. Consider walking or using public transport when attending festivities.

Most of all enjoy yourselves – have a winter walk, enjoy wildlife and enjoy being together.
