Dr Peter Turner with a copy of History Magazine and the One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich book

History lecturer at Selby College, Dr Peter Turner, has been recognised nationally with the publication of his latest article in Teaching History magazine.

His piece showcases an innovative cross-curricular project designed for post-16 students studying History and English. Their enquiry focused on how the reception of the classic novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich changed over time, both immediately after its publication and in later years.

Students explored the different ways a historian might use the novel compared to how English students or literary scholars might approach it. Most importantly, they engaged with a major work of twentieth-century literature - and enjoyed it.

Since 2022, Peter has been teaching Soviet history as part of Selby College’s A Level offer and regularly experiments with new teaching techniques. It’s great to see his work recognised nationally, and we hope it will inspire other history teachers across schools and colleges.
