Wakefield Children's University graduates

The achievements of Wakefield Children’s University members were celebrated as part of two graduation ceremonies at the Mechanics Theatre, in Wakefield.

Over 70 children graduated from the programme with a various awards, collecting between 100 and 1000 learning hours at a range of lunchtime and after-school clubs in the district.

Wearing a mortar board and gown, the children were presented with an award by Principal and Chief Executive at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, Sam Wright.

James Pennington, Head of School Partnerships at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, said:

“It’s fantastic to be able to celebrate the achievements of our Children’s University members parents and loved ones. This marks the 12th year of Wakefield Children’s University and it’s incredible to see how much the programme has grown over the years and the positive impact it has had on children across the district. The scheme continues to go from strength to strength as we expand our offer with new Learning Destinations and welcome new schools and individual members.”

Members are currently able to build their learning hours at over 90 Learning Destinations in the local area, such as Castleford Heritage Trust, Hemsworth Dragons ARLFC Youth & Junior Rugby League, Phoenix Martial Arts, Rothwell Gymnastics, RSPB Fairburn Ings and St Aidan's, Studio 64, The Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield City Cheerleaders, Wakefield Museum & Castles and Wakefield School of Tennis and more.

The Children’s University Trust is a charity which works with schools to encourage the participation of extra-curricular activities for students aged 5-14 years old in primary and secondary education.

Pupils involved receive a ‘Passport to Learning’ which they use to collect stamps each time they participate in a learning activity such as an after-school club, with the aim of collecting as many stamps and hours as possible.

The diverse learning opportunities include activities led by the College, the pupil’s school and other Learning Destinations, with activities completed either at home or online.
