Electrical Installation and Plumbing students at Selby College have recently completed expert installer training with Aico, the European leader in home life safety.
As part of the one-day course, the students were taught best practices when it comes to effectively installing domestic Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Systems, with a focus on integration, installation, siting, sensor types, testing and maintenance and standards and regulations.
After completing the training, all 24 students were presented with certificates by Aico’s team of trainers.
The course was delivered within its state-of-the-art mobile training unit, which was set up on the College’s campus.
Sam Marshall, Diploma in Electrical Installation student at Selby College said: “I was amazed by Aico’s training unit and that we had the chance to get to grips with the alarms and Aico’s technology first-hand. The trainers from Aico also took the time to present myself and my fellow classmates with certificates, which was a great way to finish the day. The programme is Fire Industry Association (FIA) CPD accredited which means it will be a recognisable qualification when I enter employment following my time at College.”
The students were also invited to Aico’s headquarters in Oswestry, in Shropshire, for a tour of its Centre of Excellence, where they were able to find out more about the distribution and history of Aico’s products.
Aico held a live fire demonstration within its specially-made smoke chamber, which provides a way for users to safely understand the dangers of fire and how the alarm sensors work to detect the incidents.
Tony Teal, North Specification Manager at Aico said: “At Aico, we pride ourselves on giving young people opportunities to widen their knowledge and expand their career prospects. We do this by delivering a number of initiatives, from educational sessions to onsite training programmes. We managed to pack in lots of activities with the students from Selby College, including a visit to our Centre of Excellence where they were able to see first-hand demonstrations of how our innovative products work in real-life scenarios. It was fantastic to see the students engaged, interested and asking questions. They are a credit to the College and their tutors.”
The day ended with an hour-long training session with Lucy Raemer, who works for the Electrical Industries Charity, which aims to educate students and young people on the importance of mental health and wellbeing within the industry.
This included an overview of what mental health is, how to recognise and support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue, as well as how students can access support services and advice via the charity.
Andy Wiggins, Subject Area Manager for Construction at Selby College said: “Aico’s team are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and passionate and they have been nothing but a pleasure to deal with. In addition to visiting the College to provide our students with expert installer training, they also went the extra mile to invite the students to its headquarters to explore its Centre of Excellence and its TV studios. For young learners and those who aspire to one day work in the Electrical industry, opportunities such as this are invaluable and are incredibly impactful on their learning. I can’t thank Aico enough for its support.”
