Course Overview

This course can either be studied at Selby College or Castleford College.

This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of Construction and to develop and practise basic skills for employment and a career in this sector.

This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis; have identified they want to enter the construction industry and are looking to identify the specific craft area for a career.

Construction Skills study programmes start with an Entry Level 3 award, a Level 1 Certificate or Level 2 Certificate. Learners typically progress from this to either a Level 1 Extended Certificate or a Level 1 Diploma in a craft area or the Level 2 Certificate in Multi Skills. Learner’s progress from the Level 2 Certificate to a Level 2 Technical Certificate/Diploma in a craft area.

On a Construction Skills study programme, you will learn through classroom teaching and activity incorporating IT access. The College has designated workshops and through practical activity, you will develop your skills.

This learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists.

The extent of this depends on the study programme and varies from guest speakers and site visits to carrying out practical activity in a live environment supervised and assessed in this environment.

What You Will Study

All Construction related study programmes cover health, safety, and principles of construction relevant to the trade, whilst developing practical skills.

With this you will study:

  • Principles of Construction
  • How to Work Safely in a Construction Environment

Alongside developing practical skills:

  • How to Carry Out Basic Wiring Tasks
  • How to Carry Out Basic Plumbing Tasks
  • How to Carry Out Basic Trowel Skills
  • How to Carry Out Basic Carpentry Skills
  • How You Will Be Assessed

    All study programme assessment is continuous throughout the academic year.

    Theory subjects are assessed through examination.

    Practical assessment is continuous throughout the year with a synoptic assessment in the summer term.

  • Entry Requirements

    4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3, including English and Maths.

    All learners will be required to complete a BKSB assessment.

  • Further Study

    On completion, and with successful progress in GCSE attainment you can progress as a full-time learner to the Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills or Level 1or 2 in a craft area.

    When studying at Level 2 progression with GCSE Grade 4 attainment is to Level 2 technical Certificate/Diploma in craft area.
