Course Overview
This course can either be studied at Selby College or Castleford College.
A bench joiner is based in a workshop and produces timber products, for example, doors, window frames; staircases; cabinets. Carpenters work on both new build and renovation schemes, on projects ranging from house extensions to city centre commercial development. A carpenter works to build stud partitions, roof trusses; fits doors and windows; fits floorboards and stairs.
This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of bench joinery/site carpentry and to develop and practise the skills for employment and a career in this craft area.
This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis and have identified that they want to enter the construction industry and have a career as a bench joiner/site carpenter.
On a joinery/site carpentry course, you will learn through classroom teaching and activity incorporating IT access. The college has designated workshops and through practical activity, you will develop your skills.
This learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists. The extent of this depends on the level of the study programme and varies from guest speakers and site visits to carrying out practical activity in a live environment supervised and assessed in this environment.

All Construction related study programmes cover health, safety, and principles of construction relevant to the trade and sustainability They also aim to develop practical skills for this craft.

- How to Mark Out and Cut Traditional Joints
- How to Manufacture/Fit Windows and Doors
- How to Manufacture Staircases
- How to Set Up and Use a Range of Hand and Power Tools
- How to Construct a Stud Partition Wall
- How to Construct a Timber Floor
- How to Hang a Door
- How You Will Be Assessed
Theory is assessed through an externally set examination set in March and June; with practical skills assessed through an externally set synoptic assessment completed in May.
- Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4, including English and Maths.
OR
GCSE English and Maths at Grade 9-3 with Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.All learners will be required to complete a BKSB assessment.
- Further Study
On completion, you can progress to Level 3 On Site Construction T level.
Alternatively, if you have gained employment in the sector you may return as an apprentice on a day release basis to achieve a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard, progressing to the Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.
