Students from Selby College ended the academic year on a high with a visit from the Army Advantage Programme – giving them the chance to find out more the different career routes available within the Army.
Digital Technologies, Engineering, Public Services and Sport students took part in sessions throughout the day, where they were able to learn from and talk to military personnel about their different roles, as well as the qualifications they could gain through the Army.
Students had the opportunity to explore five different Army exhibition stands, demonstrating the equipment they use on a day-to-day basis including medical kit, replica weaponry and bomb disposal equipment.
The stands were manned by 15 military personnel from five different regiments of the Army including Royal Logistics, Medics, Signals and Infantry regiments.
The military personnel went above and beyond to answer students’ questions about their roles and responsibilities and what made them choose a career in the Army. They were also able to create a vivid picture of what a day in the Army would look like for a variety of roles by allowing the students to interact with industry equipment and replica weaponry. The students were also blown away by the regiment’s Jackal High-Mobility vehicle and the scale of it.
Adam Sawden, Public Services Lecturer at Selby College said: “The College’s Public Services department has built strong links with the Armed Forces, with students previously attending Armistice Day events with the Army, Strensall Army Barracks and Welton Waters Adventure Centre with the Royal Marines.”
Earlier in the year, Emma Johnson from Humberside Police delivered a guest lecture to Public Services students of the College. Emma spoke to students about her role and also shared insight into how the Police promote equality and diversity, as well as how she handles key situations within our diverse society.
