As a new, combined institution, the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group was formed following the merger of Selby College and Wakefield College on 1st March 2022 and the formation of Castleford College as part of the merger. The strong geographical coherence of our campuses along the M62 corridor means that we can provide you with an apprentice from any of our Castleford, Selby and Wakefield sites.
We are a massive believer and advocate for apprentices. We have used Heart of Yorkshire Education Group for our apprentices for the past 10 years and increased our intake of apprentices year-on-year. It’s better to train someone from leaving school at 16 as we can train them to our high standards. We also find it helps with job retention as the apprentices are more loyal to you as you’ve spent time training them.

FREE Training Needs Analysis
With many possible FREE funding options available and competitive rates, why not take steps to build a better workforce for the future with us?
Do you have skills shortages in your business but are unsure of what training you need or funding you can apply for? We can help!
Our Training Needs Analysis is the process of identify areas for performance improvement and any gaps between the skills your business needs and those your employees have.
We can tell you about the options we can offer, funding which may be available, and if we are unable to provide the training you need, we probably know someone who can.
By undertaking a more formal Training Needs Analysis, we can help you to identify exactly what skills you and your staff need to effectively carry out their role and suggest potential training options.

Employer Testimonials
We use word of mouth through our employees to employ apprentices. However, the greatest resource we have locally is Heart of Yorkshire Education Group. In 2019, we got in touch with them to help us find candidates that meet our needs as the job demands students of a high calibre that possess the ability to learn quickly and absorb and retain that information. They have and continue to find us some outstanding candidates, many of which are still with us now, no longer apprentices. One of the many benefits of offering Apprenticeships we found is that they are loyal employees!
We are delighted to have a strong and longstanding partnership with the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, enabling us to work effectively with schools and the Group’s colleges to engage with and inspire the next generation to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. By involving Drax in the shaping of its curriculum, the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group is helping to address our skills needs and business goals through the development and delivery of innovative training programmes, including in vital technologies such as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage. This not only ensures that we are able to futureproof our workforce but means we can position ourselves at the forefront of the green industrial revolution – creating and protecting thousands of jobs in our local community, whilst driving forward the UK’s net zero target.
The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust employs almost 10,000 members of staff across Pinderfields Hospital, Dewsbury District Hospital, Pontefract Hospital, and adult community services in Wakefield. The relationship between the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group and the Trust is strong. I recently toured the Group’s facilities on the Wakefield Campus and held a meeting with their inspirational senior leadership team. The Group has been incredibly responsive to our workforce needs and I’m sure their partnership with health and care providers will go from strength-to-strength at both an operational and strategic level, for the benefit of the communities we all serve.
