Course Overview

The aims of the Access to HE Diploma (Health Science Professions) are:

• To introduce students to the fundamental knowledge base on which successful careers in health are built; and

• To provide students with study skills and support to explore options in higher education within the field of health sector.

This Diploma is aimed at a range of target groups, including people who are returning to education after being employed in similar sectors; people seeking qualifications to enable them to change their career path and students seeking a foundation in several subjects related to health before moving on to higher level study in the UK.

What You Will Study

This course will cover units from the below subject areas:


• Biology

• Health

• Sociology

• Psychology

• Study Skills

  • Attendance Expectations

    This course is a blended course, which will involve one day per week in college for face-to-face learning, with the remaining learning being online.
    Your college day will include classroom and hands-on learning experiences including the use of a hospital simulation ward and virtual reality scenarios.

  • Entry Requirements

    English – Level 2 Functional Skills, Grade C/4 GCSE
    Mathematics – Level 2 Functional Skills, Grade C/4 GCSE
    Science/Biology – Grade C/4 GCSE

    Many Higher Education Institutions have the above Level 2 requirements in addition to Level 3 qualification requirements.

  • Fee Information

    £3022.

    Students who were under 24 as at the 31st August who do not already hold a Level 3 qualification (eg. A levels or Level 3 BTec) may not have to pay fees, this is dependent on your postcode.

    All other students can apply for the Advanced Learner Loan to cover the fees. This is a type of student loan, but if you progress to university and complete your degree, the loan will be cancelled and consequently your Access course will be free.

  • Further Study

    This diploma has been designed to offer progression into the following areas of higher-level study:

    • Any nursing pathway (adult, paediatric, mental health etc)

    • Midwifery courses

    • Paramedic science

    • Biology, chemistry or health science

    • Psychology, child development

    • Other careers allied to health (e.g. podiatry)

    • General health qualifications (e.g. Health and Social Care, Health Science).

    Admission to these progression routes is dependent upon the choice of units from those available.
    Students should always check the entry requirements of the higher education course they intend to apply to before enrolling on an Access to HE Diploma.
