Course Overview

This course can either be studied at Castleford College or Selby College.

This qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the BSE industry, as a plumbing and heating engineer which will prepare learners to enter the industry through employment or as an Apprentice.

Furthermore, the completion of this qualification gives the learner the opportunity to progress onto higher education courses and training.

The occupational specialised programme is a two-year technical study programme designed with employers to develop the skills needed to progress into a career in the construction industry, as a plumbing, heating engineer. The technical qualification is made up of two components:

The Core Component:
The core content is designed to offer sufficient breadth of knowledge and skills for the learner to apply in a variety of contexts related to the industry and those occupational specialisms linked to this T Level. The core content is the building blocks of knowledge and skills that will give a learner a broad understanding of the industry and job roles. At the same time, it will develop the core skills they will need to apply when working within the industry.

Occupational Specialisms:
Occupational specialisms develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary to achieve threshold competence in an occupation. Threshold competence is defined as when a learner’s attainment against the knowledge, skills and behaviours is of a standard for them to enter the occupation and industry. They must also demonstrate the ability to achieve occupational competence over time with the correct support and training.

To ensure you develop the knowledge and skills required for a successful technical career in the Construction sector you study a Level 3 Technical Qualification. This is complemented with real experience of the workplace.

Engaging with specialist tutors, support staff and work placements co-ordinators, you will spend 80% of your time at College and also complete an industry placement of at least 45 days. This will provide the much-needed real-world experience needed to succeed in this industry.

  • Information, Data and Principles of measurements
  • Tools, equipment and materials used in BSE work
  • Legislation, regulations and approved standards that apply to BSE systems

  • Pipework Materials, Installation Methods and Jointing Processes

  • Principles of Measurement and Marking Out Components and Pipework

  • Heating Engineering Science
  • Regulations, Legislation, and Industry Guidance Used in the Heating Industry

    The core component will be assessed by two externally set exams covering knowledge from the building services engineering common core components with an employer set project.

    The occupational specialism is assessed you will complete an occupational specific assignment that will incorporate both knowledge and practical skills for the specialism.

  • Entry Requirements

    5 GCSEs at Grade 9-5, including English, Maths and Science.

  • Further Study

    This qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the building services engineering industry, which will prepare you to enter the industry through employment or as an apprentice.

    In addition, the completion of this qualification gives you the opportunity to progress onto Higher Education courses and training.
