Course Overview

This course can either be studied at Selby College or Castleford College.

A bench joiner is based in a workshop and produces timber products, for example, doors, window frames; staircases; cabinets. Carpenters work on both new build and renovation schemes, on projects ranging from house extensions to city centre commercial development. A carpenter works to build stud partitions, roof trusses; fits doors and windows; fits floorboards and stairs.

This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of bench joinery/site carpentry and to develop and practise the skills for employment and a career in this craft area.

This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis and have identified that they want to enter the construction industry and have a career as a bench joiner/site carpenter.

On a joinery/site carpentry course, you will learn through classroom teaching and activity incorporating IT access. The college has designated workshops and through practical activity, you will develop your skills.

This learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists. The extent of this depends on the level of the study programme and varies from guest speakers and site visits to carrying out practical activity in a live environment supervised and assessed in this environment.
