Course Overview

Access to Higher Education - Computing, is a QAA approved programme for learners who wish to pursue a career in the IT sector. This programme is designed for those who want to study computing and IT at a higher education (HE) level.  If you have the aim of working in the IT industry - but do not have the required entry qualifications and/or underpinning knowledge of computer science/technology/programming/networking, then speak to us. So, if you have been away from studying for some time and wish to start your career in the field of IT this course is for you.

We have close links with local universities that welcome students from the Access to HE course. Students are guided through their university applications and supported in their applications for relevant work experience

You will learn through formal tutor-led sessions, group work and practical activities in addition to research activities outside of the classroom.

What You Will Study

All learners on the Access to HE (Computing) programme will study the following modules:

Ungraded Units:

  • HE Study Skills
  • Maths for Computing

Graded Units:

  • Computer Science Basics
  • Introduction to Computer Programming
  • Introduction to Web Technologies
  • Introduction to Systems Analysis
  • Computer Networks
  • Databases
  • Introduction to C# Programming

To support the learning process, all students will have weekly tutorials with their personal

  • Attendance Expectations

    The course requires you to attend College for around two to three days a week.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

    The course involves a variety of assessment techniques including practical course assignments, project work, essays, oral presentations and timed assessments.

  • Entry Requirements

    GCSE at Grade 9-4 in English Language and preferably also GCSE Grade 9-4 in Maths. Please get in touch if you have qualifications alternative to GCSE.

    If applicants do not have GCSE Grade 9-4 in Maths, they may be required to study it alongside their course.

    A passion and interest in a computing related subject is highly desirable, with prior qualifications in computing/IT/ICT useful (but not a necessity).

    Applicants are considered on an individual basis, so if you do not fit the typical profile as described above, please get in touch to discuss your circumstances.  Mature students with relevant work history are also welcome.

    Selection is on the basis of an interview and possibly an initial assessment.
