What You Will Study

Here’s what you’ll be learning in the Maths Skills for Life course, designed to build your confidence step-by-step.

Session 1: Getting Started with Numbers
Kick off with an introduction and initial assessment. Learn to count, read, write, order, and compare numbers up to 1000. Explore partitioning numbers for multiplication and practise addition with up to 4-digit numbers through problem-solving.

Session 2: Mastering Subtraction
Develop subtraction skills with numbers up to 4 digits and tackle real-world problems involving addition and subtraction.

Session 3: Multiply with Confidence
Learn methods for multiplying 2 x 1 and 2 x 2-digit numbers using grid and column techniques. Dive into problem-solving challenges involving multiplication.

Session 4: Divide and Conquer
Understand division with 3 by 1 and 3 by 2-digit numbers, making division simple and effective.

Session 5: Fractions Made Easy
Round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. Understand fractions such as thirds, quarters, fifths, and tenths, and work with equivalent fractions and fractions of amounts.

Session 6: Percentages in Practice
Get introduced to percentages using visual tools for 10%, 25%, and 50%. Learn how to find percentages of amounts effortlessly.

Session 7: All About Area
Master calculating areas, including compound shapes, and apply these skills to problem-solving scenarios.

Session 8: Measures and Perimeter
Explore and compare measurements like length, weight, capacity, and temperature. Learn how to calculate the perimeter of regular and compound shapes while solving practical problems.

Session 9: Data Done Right
Gain skills in interpreting data from lists, tables, diagrams, and charts. Create and compare data using frequency tables, line graphs, and bar charts.

Session 10: Final Recap and Assessment
Review everything you’ve learned, complete your final assessment, and receive personalised feedback to celebrate your progress!

  • Attendance Expectations

    Attendance is key and all 10 week session should be attended where possible. Each session is 3 hours long and details of these by site can be found below:

    Castleford College: 3 hours each Wednesday afternoon 13:15-16:30
    Wakefield College: 3 hours each Thursday afternoon 13:15-16:30

    Please note: time may vary slightly from the above, learners will be notified of all changes.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

    You will be assessed through a personalised approach that considers their individual needs, ensuring assessment is both supportive and effective.

    A variety of methods will be available for selection, including interactive techniques such as question-and-answer sessions (teacher-to-learner and learner-to-teacher) and monitoring group discussions or collaborative work.

    Recaps will also play a vital role in reinforcing knowledge. Additionally, learners will have opportunities to engage in peer feedback, delivered either orally or in writing, and to complete written exercises, both during lessons and as tasks at home. This tailored approach ensures assessments are accessible, inclusive, and designed to maximise your success.
