Course Overview
The HND in Fine Art is designed for students who are passionate about Art & Design and want to develop their own creative practice at a higher level. This course will help to build the skills you’ve already developed and give you the opportunity to explore a wide range of creative practices in order to refine and focus your own specialist pathway.
The course aims to prepare you fully for developing your own practice by incorporating contextual awareness alongside professional and employment-focussed skills.
The College has a wide range of equipment/facilities for art and design including:
- Your own dedicated studio space
- Print workshop
- Ceramics studio
- 3D workshop
- Fully-equipped photography studio including traditional darkroom
- Regular visits to galleries, museums and exhibitions will help to consolidate your understanding of art appreciation and inform your own work
What You Will Study
The Level 5 Higher National Diploma consists of the Level 4 Higher National Certificate (above) plus an additional 120 credits at Level 5 delivered via Module B Professional Creative Practice.

- Attendance Expectations
Course is full time for 30 weeks per academic year. Students are expected to work independently for a minimum of 10 hours per week in addition to timetabled sessions.
- How You Will Be Assessed
Assessment takes place during assignment briefs, and upon completion of assignments. Creative practical work, academic written reflections, presentations and research are assessment through peer, tutor and self-assessment.

HNC Fine Art.
All applicants are required to attend an interview, you will also need to bring with you a portfolio of your work. A member of the course team to discuss your reasons for applying and your career plan.
- Fee Information
£7,400
Although some basic materials are available, students are expected to use their own specialist art materials, according to creative practice. A computer/laptop is required to undertake research and writing.
- Further Study
On successful completion of the HND, you will have the opportunity to progress to a top-up course to gain a full BA (Hons) degree at university. Other students may progress to employment, set up their own enterprise or continue to study a teaching qualification.
